Slate

A slate originates as a sediment usually a fine grained mudstone. Through the action of burial, compression and heat a mudstone will develop progressively from a shale, to a slate; to a phyllite; and then with sufficient heat, to a schist and finally a gneiss. definitive physical characteristic of slate is it's slatey cleavage which enables the material to be split into parallel sheets (i.e. roof slates). A riven slate is the result of having two sets of cleavage intersecting at an angle and creating a wavy cleavage plane. "Riven" in the stone industry refers to a finish of a stone that has been split along a natural weakness. Certain English green slates originated as volcanic ash deposits that were deposited in water. The stone itself does not have a well developed cleavage and is generally massive

Slate is a metamorphosed sedimentary rock well known as high quality roofing material- a slate roof should last well over 1 00 years. It is also eminently suitable for many architectural applications and for flooring, fireplaces and walling. Finishes Natural, Riven, Flamed and Honed. Application External and internal Flooring & Cladding also Roofing, Coping Stones and Cills. Performance One of the most durable of natural stones in extreme atmospheric conditions. Thickness 1Omm. plus. Special Uses Natural Riven Slate is non-slip even when wet making it excellent for swimming pool surrounds. Used extensively as copings owing to its low permeability.
